Evelyn Craft celebrated her 104th birthday on Sunday. Surrounded by friends old and new, young and old – though next to Evelyn, I guess most of us would be considered young no matter what our ages. Raised in Mt. Vernon, Washington, she was determined to be a secretary, insisting on taking typing classes and dismissing notions of college. Even at a young age, she knew what she wanted. She loved big bands and in the 1940’s she took the bus from her boarding house on Madison and Boren to the Trianon Ballroom in what is now Belltown. She met and married Ben Craft, raised two daughters and lived an altogether admirable life. I am privileged to be her friend. She fills my life with light and joy.
Happy birthday Evelyn!
